UK set to get little joy from revised drinking water rules

The European Commission appears unlikely to accede to UK Government and water industry demands for wide-ranging amendments to the 1980 EC Directive on drinking water quality. A leaked draft of an amending Directive maintains absolute limits for health-related contaminants, as well as the controversial precautionary limit for pesticides. Major expenditures on removal of lead piping would also be required by a much reduced limit for lead. However, the draft takes some cognisance of the UK's demands, cutting the number of parameters and introducing a new procedure to give time to Member States to bring water supplies into compliance.
