Power generators' FGD go-slow

National Power has admitted that units at its Drax power station which are fitted with flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment are switched off in favour of cheaper but more polluting plant at times of low electricity demand. The case casts doubt on the ability of current regulatory mechanisms to deliver the full environmental benefits of the FGD programme, which has cost taxpayers over £1 billion.
