Spill raises new questions over waste-based fuels

Businesses involved in the use of waste-based fuels by the minerals industry have received another dose of adverse publicity. Chemical spills in County Durham have been blamed on a leaking tanker carrying hazardous waste for trial burns in a Redland Aggregates lime kiln. The incident has revived questions about the legal status of waste-based fuels - and local MP and Labour leader Tony Blair has called for the materials to be banned pending an inquiry.
