HMIP backs down from clean combustion at Pembroke

In a climb-down from its proclaimed support for clean combustion technologies, HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) has agreed in principle to National Power's plans to fit conventional flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment to Pembroke power station. HMIP accepted the generator's claim that fuel gasification technology would be too costly - but the basis of the decision remains obscure as vital cost estimates have been withheld on the grounds of commercial confidentiality.
