Three-year breather for ReChem from plan on waste trade

A clampdown on imports of waste for disposal in the UK was proposed by the Government in a draft plan on the waste trade published on 1 February.1 But in a concession to the incineration business ReChem International, imports from other EC countries for incineration will be allowed to continue at a reducing rate for three years. Regulators are likely to face particularly difficult decisions in dealing with proposals to import wastes for energy recovery and to export wastes for recovery in developing countries.
