DoE backs off from sustainable landfills

The Department of the Environment (DoE) has responded to criticisms from some waste management businesses of its recent proposal to move to bioreactor landfills by conceding that these will not be a practicable proposition for most sites in the foreseeable future. But in attempting to meet its critics half-way it has exposed itself to the charge that it has compromised on its goal of achieving "sustainable" landfills - reviving the debate about whether it should be encouraging pre-treatment of all degradable wastes before landfilling instead.
