Government dismisses fears over benzene and unleaded petrol

Almost all the recommendations made by the House of Commons Transport Committee to reduce air pollution in London, including a ban on super unleaded petrol, have been rejected by the Government.1 Meanwhile, petrol retailers have claimed that the health risks of benzene have been greatly overstated, and that a proposed air quality standard for the carcinogen is unnecessary.
