High SO2 and NOx estimates put ships' emissions on the spot

Emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from shipping in the north-east Atlantic are up to three times greater than previously thought, according to a study of marine emissions by Lloyd's Register.1 The oil industry has argued that ships' use of bunker fuel adds only slightly to acid deposition on land - but the new findings will increase the pressure for international agreement to curb the sulphur content of the fuel.
