In search of a risk assessment for endocrine pollutants

The issue of endocrine disruptors - pollutants which disturb the body's hormone messengers - is rising meteorically up the international environmental agenda. High-level scientific meetings have been held in the last few months in four countries, including the UK, to review current knowledge of the health and environmental risks posed by such compounds and set priorities for future research. Several industries - notably water, chemicals, plastics and food - are being sucked into the debate, and environmental groups are now staking out initial positions in what promises to be a long-running controversy.
