Gasification to the fore in new IPC drafts for power plant

Draft revised guidance for combustion and gasification processes has been issued by HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP). Combustion technologies based on gasification are strongly favoured for larger new plant - but HMIP's interest in fluidised bed systems for smaller units may be dented by their high emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. The drafts say little of the standards that existing plant will be expected to meet, but suggest that improvements in particulate abatement and greater use of low-sulphur fuels are high on HMIP's agenda.
