Chlorine producers want to stick with dirty technology

Large energy savings in chlorine manufacture, a highly energy-intensive process, are not being realised because European producers want to avoid the up-front investment involved. Instead, they are lobbying Environment Ministers to back off from an earlier decision to phase out the use of mercury cell technology by 2010 at the fourth North Sea Conference in June.
