Plan to curb nitrate leaching takes shape

Revised proposals to implement the 1991 EC Directive on nitrate pollution from agriculture were issued by the Government on 25 May.1 Limited changes have been made to last year's plans to designate 72 nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs) in which some curbs will be imposed on farming practices in order to curtail nitrate leaching. But the Government has still to respond fully to criticisms that its approach to designation falls short of the EC requirements.
