Packaging industry failing to act over phthalates in food

Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) studies have found high levels of phthalate plasticisers in food. The compounds are the focus of concern because of their reproductive toxicity and oestrogenic effects. Estimated human intakes of some phthalates are close to existing safety limits and migration into food from packaging is a major source of exposure. But despite official advice to minimise phthalate migration, the packaging industry has no clear policy on the issue.
