Cement kiln inquiry generates much heat but little light

An inquiry by the House of Commons Environment Committee has heard strongly conflicting evidence on the environmental and economic case for burning "secondary liquid fuels" (SLF) in cement kilns. The Department of the Environment (DoE) has come off the fence by saying it believes that SLF should be classed as a waste - but it is far from clear that a change in legal definition will greatly affect the cement companies' plans to use the material.
