Benefits and shortcomings of EMAS revealed as first five sites win registration

The EC's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) took off in the UK in August with the announcement of the first five sites to win EMAS registration. The firms invariably speak positively about their experience of EMAS - and especially the benefits of external verification. But the first batch of applicants has also highlighted wide variations in the content of environmental statements and less than watertight official arrangements for checking on and evaluating their compliance with the law - flaws which may undermine the value of EMAS registration unless corrected.
