UK well ahead of EC targets for acid gas emissions

Emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from large combustion plant fell to half their 1980 levels in 1994, putting the UK well on course to comply with EC targets. The Government is now planning to use the breathing space to allow Northern Ireland's emissions to rise while the province's main power station is converted to gas - and further revisions to emission allocations are likely to stem from Eastern Group's bid for two PowerGen stations.
