IPPC Directive to reshape IPC, set up EC emissions inventory

The EC Directive on integrated pollution prevention and control (IPPC), now close to adoption, will require some significant changes in Britain's integrated pollution control (IPC) regime. It appears likely to force closer attention to the energy efficiency of industrial processes and to post-closure clean-up. Some sewage works, and possibly landfills, may face new controls under IPPC. New regulatory arrangements may be devised for processes not currently subject to IPC. The Directive has also ended the argument over whether there should be an EC emissions inventory, although the details remain to be filled in.
