Ministers face deadlock at ozone layer meeting

EC Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard has called for urgent action to tighten curbs on HCFCs and methyl bromide, the least stringently controlled ozone-depleting chemicals. Her call signalled the intensification of political hostilities in advance of the seventh conference of parties to the Montreal Protocol on the ozone layer in November. It was followed within a few days by news of the most rapid ozone depletion recorded so far over the Antarctic and of record ozone losses over the Arctic earlier this year.
