Pollution insurance "freebies" come under fire

The major re-insurance firm Cologne Re is proposing to withdraw support for pollution insurance offered to companies under their general or public liability policies from 1997, warning that insurers are currently "sitting on timebombs". Instead, it plans to offer stand-alone policies - after a proper assessment of the risks - which would cover gradual as well as sudden and accidental pollution. The move is intended to spur the British market into taking environmental liabilities more seriously.
