Dust flies over proposed PM10 standard

The Government has pledged new action to reduce levels of airborne fine particulates following reports by two official expert panels which have confirmed that they have a significant impact on public health. One panel has proposed an air quality standard for fine particulates which is widely exceeded across the UK. However, official hints that the Chancellor would "clobber" diesel in the Budget have come to nothing - and the Department of the Environment is now looking to its air quality strategy and tighter EC vehicle emission limits to reduce emissions. The Government has also suggested that tougher controls may be applied to industrial sources of particulates and precursors of secondary aerosols.
