ICI on the defensive over dioxins

ICI's vinyl chloride plant on Merseyside produces far more dioxins than similar plants in Europe, and vastly more than earlier Greenpeace estimates which were condemned by the industry as misleading exaggerations. ICI is contesting allegations that the plant has contaminated soils and watercourses with dioxins. But the revelations have drawn attention to its practice of dumping wastes from the plant in salt caverns - a disposal route which the Government's new waste strategy appears to rule out for the future.
