Environment Agency to take lead role in sustainable waste management

A White Paper setting out a strategy for sustainable waste management was published by the Government on 12 December.1 The strategy contains some new targets, notably for recovery of municipal waste and composting, but will do little on its own to promote waste minimisation and reuse. But there is some cause for optimism that the Environment Agency will pilot a quiet revolution in waste practices over the next few years, by means of survey work which will provide a reliable picture of waste generation and management for the first time, and by applying the results of a life-cycle analysis research programme to identify the best options for individual waste streams.
