Government flouts EC nitrate rules over Scottish estuary

The Government appears to have breached a 1991 EC Directive on nitrate from agriculture by failing to designate a Scottish estuary as a nitrate vulnerable zone (NVZ). The farming lobby has persuaded the Scottish Office to disregard expert advice that the Ythan estuary is eutrophic and suffering from excessive growths of algae. The Government has also ignored the wide exceedence of nitrate limits in many private groundwater supplies in the area.
