Concessions on contaminated soil, wastes to cut landfill tax yield

The Government has bowed to pressure from industry and announced that most contaminated soil disposed of to landfill will be exempted from the new landfill tax. Electricity generators, steel manufacturers and parts of the chemical industry have also persuaded the Government to apply a lower rate of tax to their wastes. The decisions are likely to reduce revenues from the tax by well over 10%.
