Labour council rebuffs Blair over quarry plan

The recent pledge by Labour leader Tony Blair to put the environment at the heart of his party's policies has been called into question by his support for a proposed quarry extension in his constituency. Labour-controlled Durham County Council has rebuffed Mr Blair by refusing planning permission for the project, describing it as "contrary to the principles of sustainable development."
