German approach to EMAS provokes credibility worries

More than 140 industrial sites have now been registered under the EC's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS). All but 18 of these are in Germany, which also has over 70 individuals accredited as EMAS verifiers. The UK has just four verification bodies and eleven registered sites. These contrasts are fuelling a row between Germany and verifiers and accreditation bodies in other countries about the stringency of its procedures, which may call into question the credibility of the entire scheme.
