Incinerator risk assessment hampered by dioxin uncertainties

A risk assessment of dioxin emissions from new municipal incinerators has predicted that residents living near a modern plant will receive less than a 1% increase in dioxin intakes.1 In a worst case scenario, intakes fell short of the Department of Health's controversial safety limits - but uncertainty about the sources, fate and safety of dioxins suggests that the results should be treated with caution.
