Packaging industry let off on waste recovery target

The Government is poised to allow the packaging industry to meet a significantly lower target for waste recovery than the industry itself put forward in 1994 in response to a challenge by Environment Secretary John Gummer. The move will be a blow to the credibility of the Government's "producer responsibility" initiative. Meanwhile, packer/fillers and retailers have been told that they will have to make significantly higher contributions to the recovery of packaging waste than agreed in an industry initiative last December.
