EC waste policy up in the air as MEPs reject landfill Directive

The EC Directive on landfills appears almost certain not to reach the statute book after the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to reject it on 22 May. But any rejoicing at its demise in the UK - where the Directive would have forced the phase-out of co-disposal landfills - may be short-lived if the European Commission decides to table a fresh proposal requiring pre-treatment of all degradable waste before landfilling.
