Supermarkets slow to switch to recycled carrier bags

Use of recycled plastic in carrier bags has increased slightly in the last two years, according to the UK's sole supplier, Alida Packaging, but most major food retailers remain reluctant to take them up. Some supermarkets maintain that bags containing recycled low density polyethylene (LDPE) are of poorer quality than those made entirely from virgin LDPE - while others are buying cheaper, thinner bags made from virgin high density polyethylene (HDPE) and imported from the Far East.
