Supermarkets slash own brand "green" product ranges

Supermarkets have drastically reduced the number of "green" own brand products because of disappointing sales, criticism of environmental claims and the narrowing gap in environmental performance between green and some conventional products. Retailers say the move reflects the mainstreaming of environmental issues throughout the supermarket shelves - but, combined with their lack of support for the EC eco-labelling scheme, the effect has been to leave shoppers without an easily recognised green purchasing option.
