Talks get under way on UN biosafety protocol

Negotiations on an international protocol on the safe application of biotechnology got under way in July. Most OECD countries pushed to minimise its scope and prevent the thorny issues of liability and socio-economic impacts being incorporated. Environmental groups called for a moratorium on the release of living modified organisms (LMOs) until a stringent protocol is in place.
