Major toxic waste dumping operation discovered in Durham

One of Britain's worst ever dumping incidents involving hazardous waste is being investigated by the Environment Agency. More than 1,000 chemical drums, many containing "special" wastes, have been found on a site in Consett, Durham, where their contents were emptied into the ground. The operation may have been assisted in escaping the Agency's attention by deregulatory measures introduced by the Government in 1994.
