Water companies cry wolf over new reservoirs

A report on water resources by the Department of the Environment (DoE) has prompted water companies to renew calls for new reservoirs to boost supplies in the next century.1 But their programmes to save water through leakage control and selective metering are reaping dividends - and there seems little evidence as yet to justify the environmental and financial costs of new reservoirs.
