UK "on course" to meet EC tyre recovery targets

The UK is likely to meet retreading and recovery targets for scrap tyres proposed by a European Commission priority waste stream group, according to the first annual report of a joint Government/industry working group.1 Retreading and recovery rates have been improving and are forecast to rise further because of the growing interest in burning tyres from cement manufacturers, the landfill tax and the development of pyrolysis projects. But the report dismisses the idea of legislation to require use of rubber crumb in road surfaces as costly and impractical.
