IGC set to reinforce sustainable development goal in EC Treaty

Member States look set to strengthen references in the EC Treaty to clarify its aim of achieving sustainable development during the 1996 Inter-Governmental Conference (IGC). But there appears to be little support at this stage for more ambitious amendments proposed by the greener Member States. Ireland has proposed sweeping changes to the EC Euratom Treaty to strengthen safeguards on nuclear power in the face of EC enlargement.
