Chemical companies flout EC rules on "new" substances

Widespread breaches of EC legislation requiring the testing and notification of new chemicals have been discovered by the first collaborative project across the Community to assess compliance with the law. Almost 40% of the new dyestuffs identified in the survey had been placed on the market illegally, and many hazardous dyestuffs were mislabelled.1 A second co-ordinated inspection into other sectors of the chemical industry will be carried out next year. Meanwhile, the industry is pressing for the rules to be deregulated.
