Cross-currents in the debate on EC waste strategy

The UK intends to oppose plans in the new EC waste strategy to give preference to recycling over energy recovery, require pre-treatment of waste before landfilling and embrace the concept of producer responsibility, a hearing in the House of Commons was told in November. At the same time, the European Parliament has called for the strategy to be toughened up, particularly so as to reduce waste generation.
