Government under pressure over marine pollution Bill

The Government ran into strong demands to clarify and extend its powers to intervene in shipping incidents with the potential to cause pollution during the initial stages of the Merchant Shipping and Maritime Security Bill's passage through the House of Lords in November. Other issues on which it came under pressure were the designation of environmentally sensitive areas around the coast, onshore waste reception facilities for ships, and public disclosure of ships' compliance with marine pollution legislation.
