Few new commitments in environment and health targets

Proposals to establish the environment as a new "key area" in the Government's "Health of the Nation" strategy were issued for consultation by the Departments of Environment and Health on 11 November.1 The document contains objectives and targets for outdoor and indoor air quality, lead in drinking water, noise pollution and radon in homes - but very few of these are new, some are ill-defined, and the mechanisms for achieving them are often unclear.
