Government plans deregulation of environmental health

A new deregulatory drive across local authorities' entire environmental health functions is being planned by the Government. The move is being opposed by environmental health officers, who maintain it will create new red tape for them, undermine public protection and do little for business. An official study of the deregulated enforcement procedures already in place in the health and safety field suggests that they are helping firms to avoid damage to their image - but delaying improvements in workplace safety and adding to regulators' bureaucratic burdens.
