Chemical firms in the spotlight over oestrogen discharges

Very large loads of oestrogenic compounds are being discharged by ICI and Akcros Chemicals, which make and process alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs). Akcros, a leading critic of integrated pollution control (IPC), is now being pressed to reduce its discharges by the Environment Agency, and ICI is facing similar demands. But a programme to identify and control other sources of APEs and related compounds still appears to be some way off.
