Anaerobic digestion makes faltering progress

Prospects for anaerobic digestion of municipal waste have been set back by the abandonment of a proposed scheme in Cardiff and doubts over the future of another project in Southampton. However, Kent County Council is confident that an anaerobic digester at Ashford will compete on price with landfill and incineration - and supporters of the technology say it is being held back by discriminatory subsidies under the non-fossil fuel obligation (NFFO) which favour incineration and landfill gas utilisation.
