Funding secured but key issues postponed at ozone layer meeting

Parties to the Montreal Protocol managed to agree on funding to assist developing countries in phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals over the next three years after heated debate during their latest annual negotiations. Modest steps were also made to combat illegal trade in CFCs and accelerate the switch away from CFCs in metered dose inhalers. But decisions concerning the chemical of most concern - methyl bromide - were put off until 1997.
