Brussels proposes deregulation, harmonised assessment for GMOs

A new round in the debate over the regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) opened in December when the European Commission issued a report outlining plans to amend the 1990 EC Directive on deliberate release of GMOs.1 Its main proposals are a streamlining of decision-making on applications to release GMOs and the introduction of harmonised risk assessment principles in a bid to cut down the lengthy disputes among Member States which have delayed marketing of GMOs.
