Row over landfill tax on contaminated land

The first serious dispute over official interpretations of last year's landfill tax legislation has been sparked by Customs and Excise's refusal to exempt soil and other wastes from some contaminated land redevelopment projects from the tax. The Building Employers Confederation (BEC) is threatening legal action on the issue, and says that Customs' stance is jeopardising the Government's goal of steering new development onto brownfield sites.
