Renewables win NFFO boost - but face uncertain future

Renewable energy developers have won an unexpectedly high level of support under the fourth round of the non-fossil fuel obligation (NFFO-4). Even so, the Government is likely to miss its target for 1,500MW of new renewables capacity by 2000. Prospects for the renewables industry in the forthcoming liberalised energy markets remain highly uncertain - not least because the Labour Party's plans to increase renewables capacity appear impossible to reconcile with its promised budget for "clean fuel" subsidies.
