UK to oppose Brussels' plans for noise mapping and targets

The Government will oppose proposals for harmonised environmental noise measurements, mapping and targets floated by the European Commission in its recent Green Paper on future EC noise policy, Environment Minister James Clappison told the House of Commons European Standing Committee on 19 February. Other Commission plans on rail, aircraft and product noise also look set for a rough ride from the UK. The Labour Party has broadly welcomed the Green Paper - but without spelling out where it stands on its most controversial aspects.
