Government promises appeals body for environmental information

The creation of an independent mechanism to hear appeals relating to the refusal of access to environmental information by public bodies is to be pursued "urgently", the Government has promised in its response to a report by the House of Lords Select Committee on the European Communities.1 But most of the other changes advocated by the Committee have either been rejected or will have to wait for amendments to the 1990 EC Directive on public access to environmental information.
