Government takes a back seat over water resources

Calls for a Water Saving Trust have been rejected by the Government in its response to the House of Commons Environment Committee's report on water conservation and supply.1 The Government has promised a review of the abstraction licensing system, but otherwise appears set on leaving the management of water resources to the water companies, Ofwat and the Environment Agency - despite past failures. The UK Round Table on Sustainable Development has chipped into the debate by recommending a national strategic framework for freshwater policy.
